Success Story: Kootenay Bakery — A Simple Switch with Lasting Impact
Always looking for ways to make their operations more sustainable, Kootenay Bakery decided about two years ago to improve their energy efficiency by upgrading their lighting—with support from a FortisBC rebate program. The rebate covered 50% of the cost to replace 16 inefficient fixtures with high-efficiency LED lighting.
LEDs use significantly less electricity than traditional bulbs and last much longer. Thanks to this lighting upgrade alone, the bakery is using around 2,400 kilowatt-hours less energy per year, saving approximately $290 annually on electricity. The lighting is also softer and more comfortable, and after two years, they haven’t had to replace a single bulb. Small upgrades like this help reduce energy demand and overall emissions, contributing to a more climate-resilient and sustainable business community.
Levi, Kootenay Bakery’s manager, shared that the upgrade was a straightforward way to improve efficiency: “The lighting feels better in the space, and it’s great knowing we’re saving energy and money over time.” The rebate helped make the initial investment more accessible, and they’re noticing the benefits.
