Nelson’s Visitor Information Centre (operated by the Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce) is housed in a building that reflects the community’s passion for its history, heritage and entrepreneurial “can do” attitude. The heritage CP rail station was originally built in 1901. However, it was in a sorry state and needed to be boarded up as CP Rail scaled back operations in Nelson in the late 1980’s. The Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce decided to take on this extraordinary heritage restoration project and by 2010, had an agreement with CP Rail to transfer the property. The Chamber has been responsible for securing the site from CP Rail, raising the grants and community funding and project managing this full and authentic restoration. This five-year endeavor has cost millions of dollars, much of that raised locally.
Now the charming Victorian wooden structure is home to several tenants including the Visitor Centre where knowledgeable staff can help with maps, event listings, brochures, road conditions, and up-to-the minute information about the latest happenings around town. They can also provide community information, and can help plan your itinerary for travelling around BC.
