Celebrating a Community of Green Businesses in the Kootenays
Over the past six months, the Chamber’s Business & Climate Advisor, Grace Henecka, has worked alongside Community Futures to assess, improve, and certify businesses throughout the Kootenays as part of the BC Green Business Program. Through hands-on guidance, including in-depth assessments and personalized recommendations, 19 local businesses have successfully completed the program and received BC Green Business Certification—an important milestone toward a more sustainable economy in our region.
What is the BC Green Business Program?
The BC Green Business Program is a non-profit initiative designed to help businesses in British Columbia reduce their environmental impact and adopt sustainable practices. The program provides businesses with the tools and resources they need to improve energy efficiency, waste management, and overall environmental performance.
Through tailored assessments, practical guidance, and actionable recommendations, the program helps businesses implement sustainable practices that reduce their carbon footprint and drive long-term cost savings. Businesses that meet the program’s environmental standards are awarded BC Green Business Certification, recognizing their commitment to sustainability.
“By joining the BC Green Business Program, businesses take a vital step toward reducing their environmental footprint while also improving their operational efficiency,” says Jarret Klim, Program Manager. “We help businesses identify areas where they can make meaningful changes. Our goal is to equip businesses with the knowledge and support they need to reduce their impact while contributing to a more sustainable and resilient economy for British Columbia.”
Stories from Local Businesses Who Successfully Completed the Program:
Kootenay Co-op, Nelson
The Co-op appreciated the time and support they received from the program, finding the assessments invaluable for gaining an outside perspective. They described it as a “great opportunity to focus on key areas that could streamline or improve operations,” helping to maintain sustainability in day-to-day operations.
L&C Bakery, Nelson
“The program has been an invaluable experience for us at L&C.” Switching to LED lighting not only lowered their energy consumption but also inspired the entire team to feel more connected to and committed to their environmental goals. “It’s been rewarding to see our staff take pride in these sustainable practices, share them with our customers, and the program has provided us with the guidance and motivation to make meaningful, positive changes.”
Endless Adventure, Crescent Valley
This business has transitioned to renewable energy as its primary power source, adopted composting, reduced plastic waste, and switched to 100% recycled paper for any necessary printing. They describe the process as “hands-on, personable, and efficient,” crediting the program for guiding them through each sustainable step.
Cartwheel Farm, Creston
Leading the way with a Biovator Composter, Cartwheel Farm processes food waste from local restaurants and converts it into nutrient-rich compost for their soil. They’ve also begun using a fully electric van for deliveries, setting a great example of local innovation and sustainability.

Where can you buy eco-friendly products locally?
Beyond supporting individual businesses, this project has sparked broader changes in our community. Local stores have increased their supply of eco-friendly products, and restaurants have adopted more locally sourced menu options, making it easier for customers across Nelson to make sustainable choices. For example, Cowan’s Office Supplies is now stocking 100% PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) copy paper, and both Marzano and L&C Bakery regularly adjust their menus to feature seasonal offerings.
