As a young boy Doug was always biking out of his Edmonton neighbourhood into the nearby countryside to escape and explore, so it seemed natural that after graduating from the University of Alberta with a degree in Geography, he’d end up in a place like the Kootenays.
His long and diverse career (over 20 years) as a professional photographer began in Kimberley, BC with a studio specializing in Child Portraiture and Weddings. He diligently studied and pursued is craft throughout the 1980’s gaining recognition and awards for his portrait work as a member of the Professional Photographers of Canada. Doug eventually expanded into the commercial realm. He photographed interiors for the Prestige Inns, Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, Howard Johnson Hotels, Best Western Hotels, Marriott Hotels and others. He has done assignments for Kootenay Rockies Tourism, Forest Renewal BC, Canadian Mountain Holidays and almost every ski resort, golf resort and guest ranch in southeastern BC. And his superb mountain lifestyle stock images remain in demand.
Along the way he shared his passion for photography, teaching courses at College of the Rockies (eight years), the Nelson Fine Arts Center and Private Workshops. His knowledge of studio, commercial, and natural lighting techniques is extensive to say the least.
Doug began combining his writing skills with photography in the early 1990’s contributing to such publications as Equinox, The London Daily Mail, Ski Canada, Canadian Forest Industries Magazine, Cottage, Beautiful BC Traveller, Canadian Biker, Abilities, Northwest Travel, Mountainfresh, The Spokesman Review, Kootenay Business Magazine, and Kootenay Mountain Culture.
Now living in the Nelson area, pursuing his career as a freelance photojournalist, Doug is still active as a wedding, commercial and stock photographer. His latest project is developing a photography tour, bringing serious photographers from around the world to experience the rich visual offerings of our area.
“We live in the promised land here in the Kootenays! Seems whenever I’m not working, I’m either skiing or exploring the backcountry on my mountain bike. I guess some things never change.”
