Acoustic guitar, nature spirits, virtuoso psychedelia
Bridge Guitar Reviews in the Netherlands has called him “a genius on the acoustic guitar”, a daily newspaper in Arabia calls his music “so much the colour of love” and Banyen Sound in Vancouver describes it as “a mapless sea of beautiful riffs and tender heart windows”. In 2004, after playing 33 years as a spiritual practice, and having composed only two songs, his encounter with an Amazonian Shipibo healer and the rigorous medicine ceremonies they practice triggered a sixteen month wave of virtuoso composition. This work resulted in two CD recordings and the decision to begin to play publicly.
“The chants I was hearing in these Shipibo ceremonies were amazingly sophisticated and complex, and their power was something I had not heard since the late sixties, when I saw Duke Ellington with his full orchestra. It was astounding to hear all that coming from one single person chanting. It literally dissolved my world.”
Originally from the remote northern Vancouver Island village of Winter Harbour, Michael Waters’ pathway to performing has been long and unusual. It has taken him through ten years of traveling the world, encounters with musicians from classical to indigenous traditions, and finally a breakthrough after 35 years that has put him into the public sphere of performance.
